About the Puppets

Made of colorful felt, these lace-up hand puppet blanks come with extra felt at the top, sides and bottom.  The felt over the head can be trimmed into a variety of shapes, such as shaggy hair, ears and horns, ears and mane, a bird’s crest, or a fancy hat.  The puppet’s hands and sides can be modified into hands, claws, wings or fins, and the bottom can be trimmed into feet, tail feathers or a fish tail, among other things.  I do have some templates of design ideas to get the children started.  Each puppet comes with a tipped yarn lace instead of a needle, and ready-made felt clothing with double-sided adhesive strips attached, to fit the puppets.  ‘Design Your Own’ blanks come in two sizes, one for small hands (2 to 4 year olds), and another for everyone else, which is an inch wider for a roomier fit.  I also prepare ‘Made by’ labels in advance, with each child’s name, which can then be stuck onto the puppet.  The puppeteers can design faces and decorations with water-based marking pens, also provided.  They can modify the clothing or add other embellishments with a minimum of trimming. I make scissors available for use by children ages 5 and up.

Children younger than 5 years can simply peel off the paper backing on the adhesive strips, and stick the clothing to their puppets, and design faces and decorations with the marking pens.  Adults should be ready to assist the youngest puppeteers with any trimming needed.  Children as young as 2 years old can also participate, as I can bring ready-laced puppets for them; I always bring partially laced puppets for 3 and 4 year-olds.  The puppets are ready to use as soon as they are made, and cleanup is very quick.
